About Carolina
“I’ve always liked stories with happy endings,” says Carolina Prescott. “Romances guarantee that every reader gets one.”
Perhaps a little history is in order.
“I spent large amounts of my childhood reading The Red Fairy Book, The Blue Fairy Book, The Green Fairy Book, Hans Christian Andersen’s Complete Fairy Tales, and a host of other fairy tales,” says Prescott. “Then there were the musical romances—Camelot, Cinderella, My Fair Lady, and The Sound of Music—just to name a few.
The first “real” romance novel Ms. Prescott read was Victoria Holt’s Mistress of Mellyn. One spunky governess, one spooky castle, and one brooding hero later, she was hooked. "As a young adult, I shivered my way through Holt’s gothic romances and Phyllis Whitney’s best romantic mysteries. I was thrilled to find out that they were just the very tippy-tip of the iceberg.”
Reading all of those romances led Prescott to the logical next step: writing romance. “I’ve always wanted to write romances,” says Prescott. “The requisite happy ending lets me focus on crafting an intriguing story knowing that it all has to work out in the end. It’s just the best.”
Right now Ms. Prescott is busy writing historical romances—specifically stories set in the regency and the late Victorian time periods. But she's looking forward to setting a series at the time of the American Revolution and is already planning a historical “romantasy” series.
“I love history and I love doing the research that makes a time period come to life. It’s amazing all the connections you find. And then you get to figure out how to weave all of those little bits and pieces together to make a compelling story.”
There’s another reason that Carolina Prescott writes romance. “I like that the romance business is largely run by women and that romances consistently outsell all other genres in the publishing industry. As with any business venture, the bottom line is that I’m in it to succeed. Enjoying what I do is just icing on the cake.”
Carolina Prescott divides her time between a farm in Virginia and visits to favorite places in Northern California and on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. But she always comes home to her house on a hill in her native North Carolina, where she is making a home for friends, family, and a very understanding Brittany spaniel.
